My kids never want to be the same type of thing. I always think a theme would be fun, but they don't usually agree. So this year I said let's all be ghosts. They of course said NO. So as we were walking the isles of the Halloween Store I had a grand idea. They can all be what they want on top of being a ghost. Brooke was the only one that needed some convincing. She wanted to be a princess. A plain princess, NOT a ghost princess. After 3 weeks of talking about it, and watching Mackay measure and sew the sheets into ghosts she finally decided it would work. Karrisa was a boodie bug ghost and didn't quite understand the point of any of it. She just had fun saying "howa spook" (Halloween Spook) all season long.
Seth the Indian Chief
Blake the Pirate
Sadly enough as we were getting ready to start the festivities it started to rain. While we ate chili and cornbread the rain continued. As if to say, "Thanks for Trick-or-Treating on Saturday the 30th instead of on Sunday the 31st" ..... the rain stopped and it was a pretty nice evening. It was not cold, or windy, or snowing. As a matter of fact, my little ghosts got too hot under their sheets and wanted to call it quits on account of heat stroke.
Trick-or-Treat!
Breanne and Brooke had lots of fun until several different houses with HUGE dogs came barreling out at them. After that they were hesitant to approach the houses without the moms. Brooke ran from house to house with a big smile on her face saying, "Let's go get some more candy!"
McKenzie found a fun and wild hat that lit up. She had fun Trick-or-Treating with Kaelee and Emily.
Now the fun begins. As a kid we always came home, took off our costumes, dumped our candy out on a dish towel, and sorted them. I have helped my kids continue this tradition the past few years and this year they didn't need any help. They quickly got a towel and started the ritual.
Once all candy has been properly aligned. The trade and barter system comes into play. If you have too many of one thing or something you do not particularly like....you find someone who is willing to trade you. After a few minutes of this, everyone has "the perfect bag of candy".
"Anyone want to trade me for my Almond Joys or Mounds?"
Well, the trading went as planned this year with one exception. Seth came home with a bottle of blue Kool-Aid that no one else got (even though they went to all the same houses???). Everyone wanted to trade him something and he simply would not trade it for anything. This did not make the rest of the Halloween spooks very happy. But as the rules go....if both parties don't agree, it's a no go on the trade!
